A recent or past event which one experiences as frightening or horrifying and one's life or the life of a loved one was in danger, is a traumatic event. Debilitating symptoms of anxiety, avoidance and re-experiencing can continue long after the vent is over. Exposure therapy is an evidence based tratment for trauma and has been shown to effectively lower symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in ten sessions.
